On Wednesday, PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang announced that an investigation by the party’s disciplinary committee, headed by vice-president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man, will be launched into the conduct of Selangor PAS.
“We will investigate the veracity of the allegations made,” he told reporters at a press conference after PAS’ marathon special meeting at the party’s headquarters in Jalan Raja Laut, Kuala Lumpur.
Earlier that night, PAS central committee members and state chiefs met to discuss issues plaguing the party, especially the problems highlighted by spiritual advisor Nik Aziz Nik Mat in a blog posting.
However, despite Selangor PAS commissioner Hasan Ali (left) being the focal point of numerous allegations, no mention was made about him by Hadi Awang when he announced the investigation.
Hasan was singled out
Allegations began to surface in blogs questioning the accuracy of Hadi Awang’s announcement pertaining to the target of the investigation.
According to several blog postings, the special meeting’s unanimous decision was to investigate Hasan, not Selangor PAS.
Malaysiakini has talked to sources close to the Islamic party, who confirmed that the decision of the special meeting was indeed to investigate Hasan.
“There is a difference between the president’s statement and the meeting’s decision. Dr Hasan was to be investigated by the disciplinary committee, not Selangor PAS,” said the source.
However, another source argued that the mention of Selangor PAS is as good as indicting Hasan.
“When he says Selangor PAS, he means Dr Hasan because he is the state commissioner,” said the source.
Most of those contacted however chose to keep mum on what had transpired during the four-hour closed-door meeting, in keeping with the party’s line of not airing dirty laundry in public.
Possibly they are also worried about Selangor PAS’ statement yesterday, which demanded the disciplinary committee to punish those who leaked information on party meetings.
Possible witch-hunt
Hadi Awang’s omission in mentioning Hasan’s name may be an attempt to avoid the larger issue as Hasan is not the only one mentioned in Nik Aziz’s blog as “problematic” leaders.
Other prominent leaders named include deputy president Nasharudin Mat Isa, secretary-general Mustafa Ali and Hadi Awang.
Some have alleged that this may be an attempt to rally Selangor PAS behind Hasan.
On the other hand, there are also calls from within the party to investigate not only Hasan but those responsible for the making allegations against the Selangor commissioner.
If this is the case, then the investigation could turn out to be a witch-hunt for those gunning for Hasan’s head.
Selangor PAS, through its state liaison secretary Mohd Khairuddin Othman, said that the “disciplinary committee should also investigate those who made the accusations and take stern actions against them if their allegations are proven false.”
This, however, will not include the widely respected Tok Guru Nik Aziz (above), who wanted pro-Umno leaders in PAS booted out.
