Tuanku Muhriz installed in unique ceremony

The 11th Yang Dipertuan Besar of Negeri Sembilan today at the Istana Besar Seri Menanti, Kuala Pilah in a unique and deeply traditional ceremony last seen in the state more than 40 years ago.
Tuanku Muhriz Ibni Almarhum Tuanku Munawir, 61, was proclaimed the Yang Dipertuan Besar on Dec 29 last year, two days after the death of his uncle and the previous ruler, Tuanku Ja'afar Tuanku Abdul Rahman.
The 11th Yang Dipertuan Besar of Negeri Sembilan today at the Istana Besar Seri Menanti, Kuala Pilah in a unique and deeply traditional ceremony last seen in the state more than 40 years ago.
Tuanku Muhriz Ibni Almarhum Tuanku Munawir, 61, was proclaimed the Yang Dipertuan Besar on Dec 29 last year, two days after the death of his uncle and the previous ruler, Tuanku Ja'afar Tuanku Abdul Rahman.
In a ceremony unique to Negeri Sembilan, the Yang Dipertuan Besar is elected by the "Undang" or territorial chiefs of Jelebu, Johol, Rembau and Sungai Ujong.
The installation ceremony today began at 11am with the arrival of Tuanku Muhriz and the Tunku Ampuan Besar of Negeri Sembilan, Tuanku Aishah Rohani Tengku Besar Mahmud, at the Balairong Seri (Throne Room), preceded by four palaces bearing the "Peti Benian".
The Datuk Bentara Kanan, Ibrahim Ujang, then approached the throne and sought the consent of Tuanku Muhriz to start the ceremony.
Then, he invited the Undang of Sungai Ujong, Datuk Mubarak Dohak, who represented the four Undang, to rise and declare the installation of the 11th Yang Dipertuan Besar of Negeri Sembilan.
The Datuk Bentara Kanan then called out "Daulat Tuanku" three times, and everyone present followed.
The Negeri Sembilan anthem was played and a 32-gun salute was fired by the traditional battery of the Royal Malay Regiment stationed outside the palace.
In his address, Tuanku Muhriz called on the elected leaders to serve in the interests of the people and the state, saying unity was the most important element for stability and prosperity of the state.
Crowd at the palace
The installation ceremony was carried live over television but several tourists and many local people, especially from nearby villages such as Kampung Talang, Tanjung Ipoh and Kampung Terachi, turned up at the palace to catch the event.
Among those who came to the palace were police pensioner Along Kassim, 70, night market trader Abdul Malik Husein, 32, ex-policeman Abdul Rahman Ahmad, 75, and Daljit Singh, 46, an employee of a legal firm in Seremban.
Along said he came thinking that he could enter the palace proper but had to watch the ceremony afar off.
Abdul Malik said he once saw Tuanku Muhriz praying at the state mosque and had learned that he was a member of the royalty, and had come to watch him being installed the ruler.
Abdul Rahman said the installation ceremony differed from that of the past because there were no restrictions on the people coming to watch the event now.
Daljit Singh said he considered himself fortunate to have had the opportunity to watch the ceremony in person.
