The secretary of human rights organisation Suaram pleaded not guilty at the Magistrate's Court in Johor Bahru to making a false police report last year.
Cheng Lee Whee, 27, from Rimba Terjun, Pontian, was alleged to have committed the offence at the Permas Jaya police station about 2.33pm on Oct 16, last year.
She was charged under Section 182 of the Penal Code, which carries an imprisonment of six months, a fine of up to RM2,000, or both, if convicted.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Amira Suriati Zainal appeared for the prosecution while Cheng was represented by defence lawyers John Fernandez and Hassan Karim.
Hearing on Dec 16
Magistrate Mohd Fuad Abdul Ghani fixed Dec 16 for trial and set bail at RM1,000.
Cheng was arrested in October last year to facilitate investigation under the Internal Security Act (ISA) for disseminating false statements that could create tension among the public.
In the statement, which was posted in the Johor police web portal, Cheng accused the police of abusing their power by using the Federal Reserve Unit (FRU) vehicles and water cannons in the demolition of the squatter houses in Kampung Baru Plentong Tengah here.
She also claimed that several of her friends had been arrested for behaving in a violent manner.
