Malaysia Makkal Sakti Party (MMSP) president RS Thanenthirran said today the party was set up because the MIC had failed to meet the needs of the Indian community.
He said the party would make the changes to fulfil the Indian community's needs and solve all the major problems faced by the third largest community in the country.
Makkal Sakti, or people's power, would strive to regain the support of the community for the BN which had been on the decline after the March general election last year, he said at the launch of the party by Prime Minister Najib Razak.
He also chaired its inaugural meeting meeting.
Thanenthirran, a former coordinator of activist group Hindraf, said Makkal Sakti would apply to join the BN as soon as possible.
"According to Najib, there is room for another Indian party to enter the BN and Makkal Sakti will apply for itn soon and help the BN regain the Indians' support for the government," he said.
Makkal Sakti was set up three months ago and has 50,000 members.
