Malaysia Makkal Sakti Party (MMSP) president RS Thanenthiran, in his maiden speech, says that the new party will endeavour to end the animosity with other Indian-based parties.

"We will narrow the gap and try to bring back the brotherhood. We share a long level of history and there is a brotherhood touch. We can always develop from differences," he said.

NONESpeaking to reporters after the party was launched by Prime Minister Najib Razak today, Thanenthiran (photo, left) did not waste the opportunity to take a dig at the MIC.

"If MIC is doing a good job, we would not exist. We are forced to the wall to be involved in politics. I think what is worrying about MIC is its leadership."

In response to questions on who is funding the party, Thanenthiran said: "We are funded by good friends and supporters of the party."

Party on membership drive
He said that the party has currently 57,000 members and is targeting 200,000 members within the next two years.

"We want active members. All our members proactive and not sleeping followers," he said.

Around 3,000 party supporters arrived early this morning in more than three dozen buses.

The launch started at 10.45am with an air of festivity.

Red, orange and yellow banners, flags and decorations adorned the hall.

There was also free flowing Indian delicacies and drinks for those who attended launch.

Also present was well-known Indian philanthropist OMS Thiagarajan whom sources say is the party's patron and also one of the main funders of the party.
