Malaysia Day bash to kick off in Kuching tomorrow

It's all systems go for the national-level Malaysia Day celebration, which will be officiated by Prime Minister Najib Razak tomorrow night at the Padang Merdeka in Kuching, Sarawak.

Besides a special 1Malaysia presentation of entertainment and cultural performances, Najib will also present awards to 15 recipients, five each from Sarawak, Sabah and the peninsula, who contributed towards the formation of Malaysia by Malaya, Sarawak and Sabah on Sept 16, 1963.
Information Communication and Culture Minister Dr Rais Yatim is scheduled to attend the full rehearsal this evening for the celebration themed, ‘People First, Performance Now’, which is expected to attract a crowd of 15,000 people from all walks of life in the true Malaysian spirit.
Adding vibrancy and merriment to the national event, held in conjunction with the 52nd National Day celebration, members of the public can also throng to the 1Malaysia trade exposition being organised by the ministry at the Kuching Waterfront, where a hive of activities are being held from today until Monday.
Apart from an exhibition on the history of Malaysia's formation by Malaya, Sarawak and Sabah on Sept 16, 1963, being organised by the National Archives, patrons can observe the demonstration of parang-making at one of the handicraft booths.
‘The show must go on’
Meanwhile, technician Leo Sudok was proud that this year's grand celebration would be held in Sarawak, which has enjoyed peace and stability since achieving independence.
"I will certainly bring my family to attend the Malaysia day bash and visit the 1Malaysia exhibition to gain more knowledge on the country's history," he told Bernama here.
Deputy Chief Minister Alfred Jabu, who is also the Malaysia Day co-organising chairman said he was satisfied with the preparation and work progress for the event.
"Rain or shine the show must go on tomorrow," he said when inspecting the preparation at the site on Wednesday.
In thanking the federal government for giving Sarawak the opportunity to host the event this year, he was confident that the people would turn up in force in the true Malaysian spirit.
