Violence has marred the Bagan Pinang by election campaign with PAS party workers allegedly assaulted by Umno members in several incidents yesterday.

One incident took place at about 3pm yesterday while the rest took place during the wee hours of this morning.

PAS security chief Abdul Rashid Hassan Basri said nine people were injured.

He alleged that about a hundred Umno-linked thugs attacked about 14 PAS workers who were putting up party campaign materials such as flags and posters.

The incident, which occurred at about 3am this morning, resulted in a PAS worker suffering slash wounds and injuries to his head (photo above).

"He was slashed with a samurai sword," said Abdul Rashi at PAS' daily press conference here in Port Dickson, Negri Sembilan.

According to Abdul Rashid, the victim ran from the mob - who targeted those sporting the PAS logo - and was later slashed outside the police station.

Pictures of the male victim was displayed to the press, but his identity is not immediately known.

PAS Bagan Pinang elections director Salahuddin Ayub added that the victim was surrounded by a group who came in 13 cars and 16 motorcycles.

He said nine police reports have been lodged but he laments that the police have been slow to act.

Meanwhile, Salahuddin could not confirm if PAS would go ahead with its threat to seek an injunction to postpone the by-election due to irregularities found in the electoral role.

"We have left the matter to our legal panel, who would make a decision for us," he said.

PAS provides proof

PAS made the threat after it discovered 253 postal voters comprising military personnel, who were allowed to vote as civilians in other or the same constituencies.

This list was distributed to members of the press today.

In view of the integrity of the electoral roll being compromised, PAS was contemplating seeking a postponement until the electoral roll was ‘cleaned up'.

NONEDeputy Umno president Muhyiddin Yassin (right) remarked in Pekan Siliau yesterday that the electoral roll was clean and PAS was simply seeking a postponement in view of an imminent loss in this Umno stronghold.

Postal voters, mostly military personnel, go to poll today and tomorrow. Civilian voters will cast their ballots on Sunday.

There are 4,600 postal voters who make up more than a third of the electorate in the constituency.

The by-election for the state seat will see PAS' Zulkefly Mohamad Omar take on favourite BN's Isa Samad on Sunday.
