Human Resources Minister Dr S Subramaniam has called on media practitioners and online writers not to abuse freedom of expression, saying negative writing would similarly bring about negative impact to the country.

"The challenge now is how to deal with the digital media where information can be disseminated freely," he told reporters after opening the 16th Confederation of Asean Journalists' (CAJ) annual general assembly today.
Also present were National Union of Journalists president (NUJM) Norila Daud and CAJ's permanent secretary Muhammad Saiful Hadi.
Commenting on the recent pendet dance controversy, Subramaniam said both the Malaysian and Indonesian journalists and writers should be more responsible in reporting the issue.
Meanwhile, Norila, who took over the CAJ presidency today from Nattaya Cheschotiros, said the media in Malaysia would not publish negative stories to the extent of creating tensions between countries.
Muhammad Saiful, of Indonesia, said he agreed that journalists and writers should be accountable to what they wrote.
The three-day general assembly from today is attended by 45 participants from Asean countries.
