I refer to 'Popping floors make condo owners hopping mad' in Malaysiakini.

Thank God (and Ananda Krishnan) for Astro. Astro had a true story of a shopping complex that collapsed killing many people. The cause was overloading from improper renovation.

The complex owner had been advised against the changes to the building but ignored the advice.

One day a small part of a floor suddenly rose upwards. Actually, that area was above a column. What had happened was the remainder of the floor had sunk, because the floor was too weak, the column pushed through the floor.

Then it seemed nothing more was happening. Whoever thought so, thought wrong. The column below the raised area could no longer support the floor. Other areas of floor above columns now had more load.

Later the same thing happened again, and an area of floor raised up. Then another.

There was movement and shaking, people got scared. By then it was too late. There was not enough support for the floor.

The floor fell on to the floor below. The floor below fell. The complex collapsed, the way the World Trade Centre in New York did.

Whatever the detailed cause of the popping floors of the Heron, the symptoms are very much like those of the shopping complex, including, as Priya said, noticeable movement and shaking.

I have one word to say to the residents of the Heron: run!
