The MCA extraordinary general meeting (EGM) scheduled on Oct 10 has the "good intention" of resolving problems affecting the party, its president Ong Tee Keat said today.

"That is our aim, and we all want the EGM to succeed, including deliberating on all the resolutions put up by former deputy president Dr Chua Soi Lek's group," he told reporters upon arrival at the Kota Kinabalu International Airport.

NONEHe said this when asked to comment on the statement by Prime Minister Najib Razak yesterday that the MCA EGM was aimed at solving woes and not meant to rekindle issues.

Najib also said that it was important for MCA to solve its problems, as failing to do so would affect the people's support for the ruling coalition.

Welcoming the prime minister's call, Ong said that efforts have been made for the EGM to resolve the party's problems.

Chua: No sense of direction in party

Meanwhile, Ong's rival Chua said he hoped the EGM would resolve the crisis afflicting the ruling BN coalition's second biggest party.

"I hope the EGM next month would restore the democracy and solve the current conflict in the party," he told reporters after officiating the 14th Asian Chinese Chess Championship in Penang.

NONEHe said the party now has no sense of direction as members and that members re not able to prepare for the next general election due to ongoing feud.

"Members talk a lot but there is no positive or concrete action or outcome," he said, adding that the leadership must also listen to the grassroots in order to serve the people better.

The EGM, which was called following the sacking of Chua last month, will deliberate on five resolutions, namely to move a motion of no-confidence against Ong, to annul the presidential council's decision to expel Dr Chua, to reinstate Chua was deputy president, to revoke any appointment made before the EGM and to ensure no disciplinary action is taken against the EGM requisitionists.
