Once again, leading human rights organisation Suaram will hold a fundraising dinner on Dec 6 at the MBPJ Banquet Hall, Petaling Jaya highlighted by paying tribute to defenders of human rights.

Once again, leading human rights organisation Suaram will hold a fundraising dinner on Dec 6 at the MBPJ Banquet Hall, Petaling Jaya highlighted by paying tribute to defenders of human rights.
Suaram director Kua Kia Soong stressed that fund-raising is an important part of Suaram as the organisation operates on a "shoe-string budget".
Besides conducting training on human rights for young activists, members of parliament, state assemblypersons, members of the media, academics and non-governmental organisations, the organisation also lobbies at the United Nations Human Rights Council.
"As a result of Suaram's monitoring, Suhakam was degraded in the eyes of UN's human rights council," Kua said.
Themed "20 Years Defending Human Rights," guests of the 20th anniversary dinner celebration will see performances by Shanon Shah and Meor. At the event, Suaram will also launch its new publication, "SUARAM: 20 Years Defending Human Rights".
Invitation for next year's awards
Currently, Suaram is inviting the public to submit nominations for the 11th Annual SUARAM Human Rights Award.
This annual award seeks to give recognition to local community groups, coalitions or popular movements for their outstanding and inspiring endeavours to protect and promote human rights activism.
Past winners of the awards include the Reformasi Movement, Police Watch & Human Rights Committee, wives of the ISA detainees, people of Kampung Sungai Nipah, Ladang Braemar workers, the Chin Refugee Committee and Kuala Kuang villagers.
Sarawak's Ulu Baram Penan community and the Hindu Rights Action Force (Hindraf) were joint winners last year.
Criteria for selection:
A panel of judges comprising individuals who have been involved in human rights work will select the award winner. The winner will receive a prize money of RM2,000 and a specially-commissioned glass trophy.
Closing date for nominations is on Nov 15 and the winner will be announced during the fundraising dinner.

An independent non-profit organisation, Suaram consistently monitors and documents human rights violations, advocates and campaigns on human rights issues, provides educational and training programmes, as well as supports victims of human rights violations through legal and extralegal advice.

- Only communities or groupings of people are eligible for nominations. Nomination of an individual will not be accepted.
- A community or group of people which has struggled persistently in defending their rights, justice and dignity against oppression.
- An organisation which has empowered their people in the process of struggle and continue in their efforts to promote and protect human rights.
