Inspector General of Police Musa Hassan has been given another contract extension by the government to continue helming the police force for one more year until Sept 12 next year.

The second extension will take effect from this coming Sept 13, announced Home Ministry secretary-general Mahmood Adam in a statement today.

The statement added that Yang Di-Pertuan Agong Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin has consented to Musa's one-year re-appointment following the advice of Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak.

Meanwhile, Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin said the government decision to extend Musa's contract was because his services were still needed to help in duties to take care of the nation's security.

He added that Musa had an excellent track record in discharging his duties as the IGP.

"Based on that we hope we does his duty well to continue to help the country in the area of security," he said.

Law degree from Britain

Musa started his career as an inspector in 1969 and rose up the ranks to become the top police chief in 2006 after spending a year as the deputy IGP.

In his long service, he had been a prosecuting officer in Malacca in 1973, assistant director of narcotics division of Bukit Aman (1981), Johor police chief (2003) and was appointed Bukit Aman's director of criminal investigations department in 2004.

He also has a law degree from Britain.

He was the chief investigating officer in Anwar Ibrahim's sodomy and corrupt practices trials in 1998.

In recent years, he has been accused of working in hand with criminal elements, a charge which has been denied by him.
