Two resolutions, one EGM solution mooted

MCA veteran Lee Kim Sai said today the party can "kill two birds with one stone" by having one extraordinary general meeting (EGM) to deal with the current turmoil in the party.
He said the EGM could deal with the issue of confidence in the leadership of party president Ong Tee Keat and the recent sacking of Dr Chua Soi Lek from the party at the same sitting.

He said the EGM could deal with the issue of confidence in the leadership of party president Ong Tee Keat and the recent sacking of Dr Chua Soi Lek from the party at the same sitting.
"No need to have two EGMs. Just one is enough, with these two agendas. One is for the vote of confidence and the other on Dr Chua. Let the delegates decide," he told Bernama today.
"This is just like a company. One EGM with two resolutions. It would be clean and sweet," he added.
Ong yesterday directed party secretary-general Wong Foon Meng to call for an EGM. Chua, meanwhile, is trying to garner the support of a third of the party delegates to call for an EGM.
Lee, who is a former party deputy president, said the outcome of the EGM should be decided on which motion secured the most support.
"If the delegates decide to support the motion of confidence in the MCA president, everybody including Dr Chua and his supporters must respect the decision and pledge their support for Ong.
"Similarly, if the majority of the party delegates vote against Dr Chua's sacking, then the decision must be respected," he said.
Lee said his proposal would prevent a confusing situation of two EGMs, with one trying to nullify the other.
Resolve crisis quickly
Under the party constitution, an EGM can be called in one of three ways - requisition by a third of the delegates, directive from the party president or requisition from a third of the party central committee members.
Lee said what was important for the MCA now was to resolve the crisis as quickly as possible.
"The most important thing is to resolve the crisis in time, if not the worse will come. All political parties have their problems," he added.
He believed that the EGM, instead of weakening the party, would enable it to emerge stronger.
"Nobody can dispute the outcome after that. The members are the boss, they are the final decision makers," he said.
Chua was expelled from the party last Wednesday after a disciplinary board found him guilty of tarnishing the party's image following a sex video scandal.
