MIC has urged Malaysians to assist the government in strengthening racial unity and harmony apart from deepening the understanding of the sensitivities of all races.
MIC has urged Malaysians to assist the government in strengthening racial unity and harmony apart from deepening the understanding of the sensitivities of all races.
MIC president S Samy Vellu said Malaysians must respect and honour the freedom of religion enshrined in the federal constitution if the prevailing unity within the various races are to be maintained.
"There will be no point talking about racial unity if we lack understanding about the religious and cultural sensitivities of all races," he said in his Merdeka Day message.
He said Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak has propagated the 1 Malaysia concept so that all Malaysians will feel proud to be a Malaysian despite the different religious and cultural background.
"We are all Malaysians first and we must remember to respect one another. This has been the recipe of Malaysia’s success since Independence," he said.
Sense of belonging
He said Malaysians must not forget the history of Malaysia although it has been 52 years since the country achieved independence.
"Malaysia achieved independence because the Malays, Chinese and Indians came together for one cause – to fight for freedom and dignity," he said.
Human Resources Minister Dr S Subramaniam said Malaysians irrespective of their race, must feel a sense of belonging to the country.
He said a new ray of hope has been brought about with the introduction of the 1 Malaysia concept.
"As citizens of this country, all Malaysians have rights that must be protected," the MIC secretary-general said.
Subramaniam said the majority of Malaysians wanted unity and peace to prevail so that they could get on with their lives and build a better future for them.
"Our priority now is to ensure that Malaysia attains the Vision 2020 of a fully developed nation, and to do that we must remain united always," he said.
