Anwar: Who says I met Najib?

Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim today has apparently denied a report that he had a private meeting with Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak recently.

However, there appears to be some confusion as to whether the Pakatan Rakyat supremo had met his Barisan Nasional counterpart on a private basis.

Both Bernama and the Star have different takes on this.

While Bernama quoted Anwar as conceding to having met Najib on parliamentary matters 'but never privately', the Star reported that there were private meetings, but not recently.

But both news organisations stated that Anwar had denied the Malaysian Insider report about last month's purported secret meeting at the premier's official residence in Putrajaya.

"Who said that (I met with the prime minister)? Did Najib say that?" retorted Anwar, according to the Star, when the question was posed to him

'Working together'

The online news portal had claimed that Najib asked for the opposition to work closely with the government during a private meeting in Putrajaya last month.

It said that Najib had wanted to send the message that as prime minister, he was willing to work with the opposition.

He also reportedly told Anwar that it was important for foreign investors to have confidence in Malaysia.

The portal also quoted a report from an English daily as saying that political sources from both camps had confirmed that the two politicians met at the prime minister's residence.

The sources however were vague about what transpired at the session, which lasted just over an hour.

It was reported that during the meeting, Najib had pledged
not to discriminate against states under Pakatan while Anwar took the government to task for the sodomy charge levelled against the opposition leader.
