Beer-drinking model urged to file appeal

Women, Family and Community Development Minister Shahrizat Abdul Jalil has advised part-time model Kartika Sari Dewi Shukarno to apply for a review or appeal against the sentence meted out against her by the Kuantan Syariah High Court.

"This is not only for her sake and to uphold justice but also because the sentence might create a precedence that Malaysia is practising a harsh syariah law especially on women.
"Actually the Malaysian syariah law, which upholds the spirit of Islam, is fair and impartial, and in accordance with the spirit of Islam and gender blind," she said in a statement today.
Kartika, 32, was sentenced on July 18 to a fine of RM5,000 and six whippings for consuming alcohol at a hotel in Cherating last year.
Punishment deem too excessive
She has to surrender herself to the authorities at Kajang Women’s Prison tomorrow to receive the six lashes as the prison rules say that only someone who is a prisoner can be whipped.
Shahrizat said what was at issue was not whether the accused was a woman but whether the maximum sentenced imposed on Kartika was fair and adhered to the syariah rules.
"No one can question whether consuming alcohol is an offence under the syariah law.
"However, to the public the maximum sentence - RM5,000 and six lashes of the rotan - will not meet the objective of educating the accused," she said.
