Recently our Prime Minister said some nice things regarding Malaysia. He first asked: "Why did we succeed in our fight to obtain independence peacefully while so many countries failed?

He then went on to provide the answer. He said the colonial masters were reluctant to give up the country but when Malaysians stood united in one voice, they could not refuse independence.

Najib said he doubted the colonial masters would have agreed to give Malaya its independence if the past leaders had gone on their own to meet the British instead.

I felt a sense of relief because at least we have a Prime Minister acknowledges the fact that independence was obtained by the united effort of all Malaysians.

Self-serving politicians will beg to differ. For 50 years, the Barisan Nasional government could not unite the various races because the ultras played racial politics in the media and government institutions.

Many of our young men and women are confused because they had been brought up in an atmosphere of suspicion and unfairness.

Patriotism was never in their minds. They left the country in search of better opportunities.

Today our Prime Minister wants to take back Selangor. The last general election opened the eyes of the people and they know who to give the votes to.

Can the Barisan Nasional government or Umno be trusted? Being fair to all is universal trait and if Umno is fair to all, it will be respected by the people. But I doubt this is possible in the BN.

It is time to embrace real diversity in our political culture. We cannot have over-zealous politicians who play the racial card for their own selfish designs.

We must not allow newspapers and editors who spin falsehood and negativity against other communities. Malaysians have lived together for decades and have worked well. To move forward, we must talk sense and live together as one Malaysia.
