A Terengganu state assemblyperson arrested by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) yesterday was remanded for five days today to assist in investigations of having received bribes from a company.

According to Bernama, the remand order was issued by Kemaman Sessions Court judge Rofiah Mohamad.

All three are now held at the Kemanan police district headquarters.

Yesterday, the 42-year-old Umno assemblyperson and his friends were arrested by the MACC at about 9.20am at a hotel in Kijal.

Landscape project

They were held for allegedly demanding bribes of between 10-13 percent of the value of a landscape project worth RM2 million from the company.

When arrested the MACC found RM5,000 on the assemblyperson and he is alleged to have received RM15,000 from the company.

The New Straits Times today reported that the arrests were carried out by MACC officers from its headquarters in Putrajaya and not from the state.

Quoting sources, the report said the assemblyperson was taken straight to the MACC headquarters in Putrajaya after being arrested.

Meanwhile, Terengganu Menteri Besar Ahmad Said said the state government would not interfere in the matter.
