MIC Youth coordinator T Mohan has announced his candidacy for the party’s Youth chief post. The elections are to be held on Aug 16.
Addressing supporters comprising state division youth leaders and delegates this morning, the businessman related his three-year plan for the Youth wing, if he wins the mandate to lead it.
His plans are to empower the members of the wing and to assist the grassroots by helping them to be financially stable.
Mohan, 36, said he had decided to vie for th post because of encouragement from national Youth members and moral support from the Indian Malaysian community.
The presence of MIC Youth adviser S Vell Paari, the son of party president S Samy Vellu at the event, is being seen as endorsement of the candidacy.
Mohan will stand against Samy Vellu’s nephew, SP Muthuvello, who had announced his candidacy two weeks ago.
A member since 1997, Mohan (left) is the Puchong division leader and a member of the party’s central committee.
He was appointed Youth coordinator by Samy Vellu last year, after former Youth chief, SA Vigneswaran stepped down.
In an immediate reaction, Muthuvello said he is curious as to why Mohan’s reforms plan has been announced only now, when it could have been implemented during his tenure as coordinator.
“He was appointed almost a year ago, but we have not seen any of this. For the past year, we have been busy collecting people for demonstrations,” he said
He added that the wing needs a more progressive and intellectual direction in order to produce “thinking youths”.
“We cannot just use them to amass crowds for street demonstrations. We cannot be acting like the opposition all the time. The wing must (serve as) the shoulder to the wheel of the party.”
‘Plan already in action’
Mohan refuted Muthuvello’s claims, saying that protests are not organised for the sake of protesting.
“We have to know what people want. (In the instance of) Kampung Buah Pala, I received over 1,000 positive messages because of our protest,” he claimed.
“We have made much progress within the last 10 months. This plan is not new but is already in action. Maybe he (Muthuvello) is unaware of it.”
Mohan also said he wants a clean contest and that he will “salute Muthuvello and wish him the best if he wins”.
The final date for nominations is Aug 8.
