The 38-year-old UK-trained barrister, whose uncle is none other than party president S Samy Vellu, also believes that the Youth wing needs a new direction
At a press conference at his law firm in Kuala Lumpur this morning, Muthuveloo (right) announced that he would be vying for the Youth chief post come the wing's elections on Aug 16.
The post is currently helmed by T Mohan, who was appointed Youth coordinator by Samy Vellu last year, after the former Youth chief SA Vigneswaran stepped down.
Stressing that it is not about personal glory or gratification, Muthuveloo said his decision was motivated by the desire to bring about positive changes within the party and community.
"The reason I want to contest is because I have this firm view that we need a new direction for the Youth wing for the betterment of the party and the community on the whole.
"It has come to a point of time where change is inevitable and changes must be made to adapt to the needs and aspirations of the community," he said.
"The Youth wing is an important wing simply because the majority of the electoral are youths... so we have to find ways and means to attract the professional groups because we need their experience and minds to help us charter the course," he added.
The nomination for the Youth wing is slated for Aug 8.
'Fortune favours the bold'
As for his chances, Muthuveloo was anything but modest. Beaming with confidence, the president's nephew is certain that providence is on his side.
"Fortune favours the bold. I have travelled across the country to meet the youth delegates over the past one year and I have surveyed to the best of my abilities... I am confident of winning the hearts of the delegates and I am confident I can win," he said.
Despite the negative sentiments associated with the party's youth members, with some linking them to thuggery and gangsterism, Muthuveloo however felt otherwise.
"MIC youths are dedicated and focused," he stressed. "They are like diamonds in the rough."
Asked whether he has the consent of the party president to vie for the post, Muthuveloo replied: "I have informed him and he has accented to it... well he didn't stop me, and I take that as an implied consent."
Muthuveloo also said he has made his intentions known to Mohan and he welcomed the competition in the spirit of democracy.
The son of Samy Vellu's younger brother, Muthuveloo joined MIC in 1989, and in 2005, he was appointed as the Youth development bureau chairperson.
