10.20pm: A jubilant Kelantan Umno chief Mustapha Mohamed claimed a "moral victory" for BN.

manek urai by election result 140709 02 "We have reduced the majority significantly. PAS only win with a slim majority, hence the real loser is PAS," he told a press conference. "This is the first time we have slashed the opposition majority so significantly."

He added that Umno won in only one polling station in the last general elections, but this time they won five out of nine.

Mustapha also said the election result indicated that the Kelantan people have rejected the leadership of PAS MB Nik Aziz.

“It proved that the leadership of (Prime Minister) Najib has been accepted by the people, and I believe the momentum will increase in future."

Mustapha also said since the majority of voters had rejected the deputy prime minister’s offer for a new bridge in return for an Umno victory, they should not blame BN for not delivering its promise.

"Tan Sri (Muhyiddin) said we will build a two-way bridge if we win. Hence, we’ll have to relook at it since we have lost."

He hinted that Manek Urai would not be getting any special help from BN as it is no longer an ‘anak emas’ (golden child).

"Previously we talk about ‘anak emas’, now no more. (Manek Urai) will be like any other children - we have anak jeli, anak gua musang, anak terengganu, anak pahang, so many children."

Mustapha also said Umno could challenge the election result in court.

"I was surprise by their action, this ‘samseng’ culture surprise me," he said, referring to the stone-throwing incident which hurt three Puteri Umno members.

Mustapha also said the result showed that young voters have returned to BN.

9.35pm: Kelantan PAS leader Husam blamed the narrow victory on vote buying. He said PAS had lodged a report over the matter and hoped that action would be taken.

"We lost as a result of money politics,” he said. He nevertheless congratulated Manek Urai voters for resisting the 'bribes' offered by Umno to allow PAS to retain the seat. Hatta said that the bridge was "far too tempting" for some voters.

Husam also denied that Nik Aziz's influence was diminishing.

When asked whether the controversy involving party's No 2 Nasharuddin Mat Isa had a impact on the outcome of the by-election, he skirted the question by saying it was a naughty question.

9.10pm: PAS top leaders along with their victorious candidate Mohd Fauzi Abdullah are at the main tally centre. Among them are Husam Musa, PAS treasurer Dr Hatta Ramli and central committee member Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad. No Umno leaders are there. And no sign of Nik Aziz too.

8.26pm: A grim-looking PAS candidate Mohd Fauzi Abdullah leave the party campaign headquarters for the main tally centre in Kuala Krai to claim victory. Party supporters are seen trying to cheer him up by telling him that a win by one vote is still a win.

Full unofficial results:

The Islamic party has won 14 out of 28 ballot boxes and four out of nine polling stations.

Election Commission has temporary stopped announcing the results from the final five ballot boxes.

7.59pm: According to inside sources, the final tally has PAS winning by 65 votes after recount . There will be no more recount but it is learnt that Umno is seeking another recount.

There are recounts for some ballot boxes.

7.21pm: Still no announcement from the Election Commission although most of the ballot boxes are already at the main tally centre.

NONE 7.20pm: Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin tweets: Tuan Aziz Tuan Mat of BN wins by 38-vote margin.

7.15pm: At the BN operation centre, about 50 party workers appear upbeat. Some claimed that Umno has won by 200 votes while others said the margin of victory was about 30.

6.55pm: First few ballot boxes arrive at the main tally centre in Kuala Krai.

6.51pm: Hundreds of PAS supporters gather outside the party’s campaign headquarters in Manek Urai. Party volunteers distribute posters of their candidate, Mohd Fauzi Abdullah, to motorists - many them honking their cars and motorbikes in jubilation even before the results are announced.

Election Commission cars are seen going pass the campaign HQ ferrying ballox boxes to the main tally centre in Kuala Krai (about 15km away).

NONE 6.45pm: There is a carnival-like atmosphere near the main tally centre at SMK Yahya Petra as PAS supporters start to gather in anticipation of the results.

Stalls have been put up to sell food and drinks and many roads leading to town have been closed with the police redirecting the traffic.

5.50pm: Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin has left Manek Urai to attend a Quran reciting competition in Perak.

5.31pm: There is a bad traffic jam along the road from Manek Urai to main town of Kuala Krai. The main tally centre is in SMK Sultan Yahya Petra 1 in Kuala Krai.

5.20pm: PAS volunteers are removing all cars from the compound in front the party's campaign headquarters, so that its supporters can gather there to wait for the result.

A big screen has been set up in front of the building, to update supporters during the vote count.

NONE 5.05pm: PAS supporters are already celebrating the victory of its candidate Mohd Fauzi Abdullah.

When the 50-year-old fish wholesaler arrived at the PAS base around 4.40pm, he was greeted by shouts of 'Allahuakhbar' (God is great) and mobbed by supporters.

Mohd Fauzi looked elated, indicating that victory is already in the bag.

NONE Earlier, Kelantan PAS election director Abdul Fatah Harun told Malaysiakini that based on exit polls, the party had won by a majority of nearly 2,000 votes.

"I cannot remember the percentage of votes obtained by PAS and Umno. But we will win by 2,000 votes," he added.

Mohd Fauzi, the Kuala Krai PAS division treasurer, is up against Umno/Barisan Nasional candidate Tuan Aziz Tuan Mat, 39.

The nine polling stations closed at 5pm, with an 87.3 percent voter turnout recorded.
