Selangor opposition leader Dr Mohd Khir Toyo has accused DAP’s Ng Suee Lim of grossly overstating the cost of his nearly completed mansion in Shah Alam.
Selangor opposition leader Dr Mohd Khir Toyo has accused DAP’s Ng Suee Lim of grossly overstating the cost of his nearly completed mansion in Shah Alam.
"I bought the house with a loan of RM3.5 million from a foreign bank," he told a hastily organised press conference at his Shah Alam office this afternoon.
"Since Ng claims the house costs RM24 million, he is now officially my (real estate) agent. If he can sell it at that price, I will give him 50 percent commission," he quipped.
Ng, the Sekinchan state representative, took a group of journalists to visit the lavish half-hectare property surrounded by greenery in Section 7 this morning.
Calling it a "Balinese-theme palace", Ng said construction industry experts estimated that the cost of the house was RM20 million, while public documents show that the land cost RM3.8 million.
Ng said he exposed the matter because it is necessary for the public to know how Khir, 44, could afford the property after eight years as menteri besar.
RM500,000 for roof works
Khir also denied the allegation that the land cost RM3.8 million, despite being told of the Land and Mineral Office documents which state otherwise.
He claimed that the RM3.5 million price- tag was for both the house and the land.
However, he admitted spending RM500,000 on renovation works adding that, "I just changed the roof."
Khir, who found himself on the other side of the political fence after last year’s general election, said work began three years ago and has yet to be completed as he is funding the renovations gradually.
He stressed that when the project started, he knew that it would become an issue. So, he took a loan from a foreign bank to ward off potential accusations that he had applied pressure for the loan to be approved.
"I bought everything according to procedure. You know to get a loan from a foreign bank is not easy," he said.
"If I cannot afford the loan, the bank won't approve," he explained, and then took a cheap shot at the DAP rep, stating: "The problem with Ng is he studied only until Standard 6, (and) cannot understand."
Asked about the repayment period, Khir said it was a 30-year loan, but declined to reveal other details. He also denied a request for a tour of the property.
On related allegations that have been circulating on the Internet since March, when the Umno party polls were taking place, Khir said he knew there were certain quarters within Umno and PKR who were in cahoots to ruin his chances in the contest for the Umno Youth chief post.
Khir, who had lost in that three-corner fight, said he would consider taking legal action against Lim.
