A(H1N1): 7 more cases, 42 in total

The Health Ministry has today confirmed that there have been seven more cases of A(H1N1) flu in the last 24 hours including a second local transmission, bringing the total number of infection of the deadly flu to 42.

All of the patients who had tested positive with the flu are Malaysians where five of them had just returned from Melbourne and one from London, including the local transmission case.
In a statement released by Health director-general Dr Ismail Merican on the ministry’s website, the second local transmission case was detected from a 22-year-old male who was in contact with one of the patients who had tested positive two days ago.
“The patient did not have a travelling history, but as soon as he found out that he got into contact with one of the patients, he went to Hospital Sungai Buloh on June 18 and was subsequently admitted,” said Ismail.
Ismail said the patient had shown symptoms of fever, headache and body ache on the same day he was admitted and had tested positive the next day.
Another case involving an 11-year-old girl who had just returned home after a holiday in Melbourne with her grandmother who was the 30th case reported on Friday. They arrived on AirAsia flight X D7 2723 on June 16 at 7am.
It is reported that she had gone to school at SRJK (Cina), Jalan Davidson, Pudu the following day resulting in the home quarantine of 47 of her classmates.
According to Ismail, the Health Ministry has quarantined four students who travelled in the same car with her on the way to school.
On June 17, Malaysia had recorded its first case of local A(H1N1) transmission involving a 17-year-old girl who had caught the virus within the country from another patient who had tested positive last week.
Stewardess infected
Ismail also revealed that a 27-year-old Malaysian female who works as a stewardess for Singapore Airlines has also tested positive for A(H1N1) virus.
“She was on board of Singapore Airline (Singapore to London) on June 14 and (London to Singapore) on June 17. After that, she travelled to Penang via Malaysian Airlines and arrived there on June 17 morning,” said Ismail.
“She had shown the symptoms of fever, sore throat, cough and muscle ache on the same day and received further treatment in Penang Hospital the next day where she was subsequently put under isolation ward,” he added, adding that she had tested positive of the virus and her housemates have also been quarantined.
According to Ismail, up until 8am today, World Health Organisation (WHO) has informed that there have been 44,596 cases with 180 death from 94 countries, an addition of 4,507 cases with 13 deaths.
Majority of the cases were reported from epicentre of the outbreak Mexico (1,383), Canada (865), Chile (790), United Kingdom (291) and Thailand (208).
