Six charged over Black Monday clash

Six persons allegedly involved in last Monday incident where two groups of youth went on a rampage after a gang row in Kamunting, were charged today in two Taiping courts for possession of dangerous weapons.

The six alleged participants in the incident, dubbed as Black Monday by local residents, were charged under Section 6(1)of the Dangerous Weapons Act 1958.
Upon conviction, the offence carries imprisonment up to two years and strokes of the rotan.
In the early hours of June 9, the two groups triggered a rampage which quickly turned racial, resulting in an attack on 16 innocent people.
Nine people have been charged so far over the clash.
Yesterday, three men were charged, also for carrying dangerous weapons. The trio, J Stanley Kumar, 36, S Surres, 27, and R Sarawana Kumar, 27, pleaded not guilty and claimed trail.
Today, four accused - Mohamad Din Mat Isa, 21, Mohamad Adib Afdhal Zainal,19, Mohamad Noorirfan Mohamad Hatta, 19, and a 18-year-old juvenile delinquent whose name has been withheld - pleaded guilty to the charges before magistrate Sharifah Syed Mashor.
All four, who were not represented by lawyers, are alleged to have committed the offences of carrying dangerous weapons in the car park area of Burmese Pool in Taiping, about 10km from Kamunting.
Din was alleged to have carried a hockey stick, while Adib had two parangs, Noorirfan, a parang, and the 18 year-old, a ‘Rambo’ knife.
Sharifah fixed Aug 20 for sentencing.
Two more to be charged on Monday
Meanwhile, in another court, both Fairos Ahmad Nor, 26, and Mustafa Kamal Lokeman, 19, pleaded not guilty to the charges and claimed trial.
Fairos was alleged to have in possession of an iron rod in front of Chin Lee Motor workshop in Kamunting at 12.50am on June 9.
While Mustafa was alleged to have a parang and a knuckle-duster at the New Lake View Hotel in Lake Gardens at 4.15am on June 13, four days after the clash.
Magistrate Rahini Kartini Abdul Rahim then set bail of RM1,900 for each of the two accused and fixed Aug 24 for the mention of the cases.
Malaysiakini learned that another two suspects who were allegedly involved in the Black Monday incident in Kamunting will be charged in the Taiping Magistrate’s Court next Monday.
