PAS plans 'surprise approach' for S'wak elections

PAS is planning a 'surprise approach' the create inroads to tackle in the upcoming state polls in Sarawak which is due to be held by 2011.
The party's deputy president Nasharuddin Mat Isa told reporters after giving his speech at opening of 49th Muslimat (Women's wing) muktamar, that PAS was contemplating on a new strategy to gain mileage in the eastern state.

The party's deputy president Nasharuddin Mat Isa told reporters after giving his speech at opening of 49th Muslimat (Women's wing) muktamar, that PAS was contemplating on a new strategy to gain mileage in the eastern state.
"PAS is a political organisation that is changing its strategy in accordance with the changing political landscape," said Nasharuddin. There are growing speculations that polls could be held soon.
He however said that PAS has yet to discuss its approach with its coalition partners in Pakatan - PKR and DAP - and that the plan, as for now, has been mooted only within the PAS central committee.
Nasharuddin remained tight-lipped on any further information on the details and executions of the plan to takeover Sarawak from the grip of the national coalition BN.
"If I was to announce the details, the thrill will gone," he quipped.
The Muslimat gathering today will determine the outcome for the top two posts which will be in the hands of the 242 delegates present.
Dr Asiah Ali is standing against incumbent head Nuridah Mohd Salleh, while senator Siti Zailah Mohd Yusoff will take on Wan Hasrina Wan Hassan for the deputy's post.
Senator Mumtaz Mohd Nawi has won the vice-head position uncontested.
'Discussion doesn't mean joining Umno'
On a related matter, Nasharuddin also repeatedly denied that there was an attempt to get PAS to work hand in hand with Umno and Barisan Nasional.
He assured, despite being pressed by reporters, that the party will remain loyal and work in strengthening its position within the Pakatan coalition.
Nevertheless, he did not deny that there have been discussions or muzakarah with Umno in the past.
"The window for future discussion will not be closed... (but) discussions does not mean that PAS will enter Umno... PAS will commit to any discussion held in the interest of the nation," stressed Nasharuddin.
The discussion with Umno - something which Nasharuddin had always supported - is set to be a deciding factor in the race for deputy president's post tomorrow.
Nasharuddin is being challenged by pro-Pakatan Husam Musa in what is deemed to be a tight fight. The outcome of this battle is set to determine the immediate future plans of PAS. A third candidate Mohammad Sabu is also in the run for the post.
Thanking the supporters' club
Meanwhile the muslimat muktamar began this morning with incumbent head Nuridah making a pledge to stand behind PAS and Pakatan Rakyat and hoped that the three party alliance will be further strengthen.
"The Muslimat wing appreciates the corporation shown by PKR and DAP who respect the Islam that is subscribed by PAS," she said.
She also thanked the PAS supporters' club for their enormous help in the recent by-elections. She cited this as an example that PAS has managed to broaden its appeal to include the non-Muslims.
In line with the 'PAS for all' theme, she also said that Muslimat wing was committed to fulfil the wishes of the PAS supporters' club and many other citizens who needed assistance.
PAS supporters' club was represented at the muktamar by R.Kumutha who is the national women's chief (Indian wing).
Other major themes that Nuridah touched on were the women's role in the family institution and their evolving role professionally as law makers in determining the nation's direction.
In the polls, incumbent Nuridah successfully retained her post by defeating Asiah Ali by 36 votes. Nuridah obtained 136 votes and Asiah got 100.
However the incumbent deputy Wan Hasrina Wan Hassan was defeated by challenger Siti Zailah Mohd Yusoff.
