Supporters club may become a party wing

Outgoing PAS Youth chief Salahuddin Ayub said the party is contemplating on turning its supporters club comprising non-Muslims into a wing similar to the youth and muslimat (women's) wings.

Explaining further, deputy president Nasharuddin Mat Isa said the supporters club has more than 20,000 members.
"We want to give them a more established platform, the other technicalities will be sorted out later," he added.
Salahuddin and Nasharuddin were speaking to reporters at the sidelines of the PAS Youth muktamar in Gombak this evening.
The duo were asked to elaborate on Salahuddin's speech earlier, where he told the some 500 delegates that the party was looking into the possibility of constructing a new type of membership for non-Muslims.
'Muzakarah is just talking'
As for the issue on PAS joining forces with Umno, Nasharuddin explained that he had raised this in his speech earlier not to defend himself but rather to reiterate the leadership's stand on the matter.
"Muzakarah is just talking, it doesn't mean PAS will join (Umno) ... and that matter has passed," he said.
It's an open secret that Nasharuddin forged close ties and initiated secret meetings with Umno after Pakatan Rakyat scored unprecedented electoral gains in last year's general election.
Although it is learnt that it was welcomed by PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang, it did not go down well with Pakatan allies – DAP and PKR - as well as several PAS leaders such as Husam Musa.
Husam recently said that he decided to challenge Nasharuddin for the number two slot because of this.
"There were many meetings and unwanted close ties with Umno much to my dislike. This is the main reason for my challenge," he had said.
Meanwhile, Nasharuddin today remained tightlipped when quizzed on whether he expected Husam to put up a tough fight in Friday's elections.
Commenting on PAS needing a direction, the deputy president said the muktamar was an early preparation for the next general election.
The assembly will provide a sense of direction for the party, he added.
