Still no decision from ROS on PPP imbroglio

Despite earlier confidence that the crisis caused by two factions in the People Progressive Party (PPP) would be “put to rest” within the week, more time will now be need to clarify the issues raised.
Despite earlier confidence that the crisis caused by two factions in the People Progressive Party (PPP) would be “put to rest” within the week, more time will now be need to clarify the issues raised.
Barisan Nasional deputy chairperson and deputy premier Muhyiddin Yassin, who met the Registrar of Societies (ROS) this morning, revealed that a preliminary report indicates that many issues need to be “explained”.
“The ROS told me that both parties need more time to come up with an explanation, and this (process) is only expected to be completed within two to four weeks,” Muhyiddin told reporters in Kuala Lumpur today.
The issues pending clarification revolve around the actions of party president M Kayveas and sacked supreme council member T Murugiah since last month.
Murugiah will be asked to explain whether the EGM he held on May 24 is legitimate and whether there was quorum to ‘elect’ him as president.
Kayveas, meanwhile, will have to explain his status as president before he sacked Murugiah and six other PPP leaders.
“There are a lot of other issues. We are just not talking about the (legitimacy) of PPP per se, but Kayveas also needs to explain himself on his position (as a president),” said Muhyiddin
Last month, Kayveas had sacked rival Murugiah, who is also deputy minister in the Prime Minister’s Department.
Murugiah subsequently called an extraordinary general meeting and declared himself as the “new PPP president”. Since then, there have been accusations and counter-accusations between supporters of both factions.
‘Not enough details yet’
When pressed on details of the preliminary report, Muhyiddin said the information is insufficient to determine the outcome and settle problems in the party.
“We still have to wait for the (full) report from the ROS investigation to come out before we can forward it to the prime minister (for the next course of action),” he said.
Muhyiddin said he himself is uncertain if ROS will take action against the party leaders.
“It is all up to ROS to decide on the real situation,” he said, adding that BN would not consult or advise either Kayveas or Murugiah on the matter.
Muhyiddin was tightlipped as to whether the clouds over the party will hamper the annual general meeting planned for Sunday.
Yesterday, Kayveas had told Bernama that ROS has all “the relevant documents” and that it only remains to be ascertained whether or not the EGM was legal.
