The Ampang police today obtained a two-day remand order against the 16 people arrested last night for allegedly holding an illegal assembly outside the DAP's Teratai service centre.

The remand order was obtained at the Ampang magistrate's court. The 16 were brought there to face magistrate Azaraorni Abd Rahman at about 9.45am. The remand expires tomorrow.

The 16 were represented by lawyers Gobind Singh Deo and Lim Lip Eng.

Gobind told reporters that the police had sought the remand order to complete their investigations under the Police Act.

Anyone found guilty of breaching the Police Act by gathering without a police permit faces a jail term of up to one year or a fine between RM2,000 and RM10,000.

Political literatures seized

Meanwhile Ampang Jaya district police chief Abd Jalil Hassan said that the 16 were arrested after failing to disperse despite being given four warnings to do so.

He said that the assembly was illegal as they did not have a proper police permit. He added that some 50 people had gathered at the assembly and were carrying candles.

"The police arrest those who refused to disperse, made up of 12 men and four women, including Teratai elected representative Jenice Lee," he said in a statement.

He added that they were being investigated under Section 27 of the Police Act.

"The police only seized 45 copies of political handouts. We will conclude our investigations as soon as possible," he said.

Lee's second arrest

Following the arrest last night, all male detainees were held at the Ampang district police headquarters while the female detainees were kept at the Pandan Indan police station.

Statements were recorded from all of them overnight. Eyewitnesses saw Lee garbed in a police lock-up uniform at about 1.30am.

This was Lee's second arrest in this week. She was first detained by the police for six hours at another candlelight vigil on Tuesday.

They were arrested after a lightning short police warning for them to disperse.

Lim however told Malaysiakini last night that the group had walked to the service centre with candles and a cake to celebrate his 26th birthday.

"But when we came down to the road, a police officer shouted to us, saying that we were holding an illegal assembly," he said.
