Major reshuffle in PKR S'wak

PKR Sarawak has seen a major leadership reshuffle with its de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim relinquishing his post as state chief last night and named Mustaffa Kamil Ayub to act in his place.
PKR Sarawak has seen a major leadership reshuffle with its de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim relinquishing his post as state chief last night and naming Mustaffa Kamil Ayub to act in his place.
Although no reasons were given, it is however understood, that Anwar wants to concentrate on the upcoming Penanti by-election, pressing problems in the peninsula as well as personal matters.
Anwar became Sarawak's liaison chief from mid last year. And his visit last night was the first since the defeat of the party in the Batang Ai by-election of April 7.
Mustaffa - a PKR vice president from Perak - is to act as liaison chief for the time being until and when a Sarawakian is ready to take over.
After being named as Sarawak liaison chief, Mustaffa chaired a meeting of divisional leaders and the discussion centred on the appointment of leaders to represent each community with a view to strengthen the party.
Commenting on Mustaffa's appointment, Ngemah state rep Gabriel Adit said: "The onus is on us to look for a Sarawakian to lead and to look after the affairs of Sarawak."
"It is a temporary measure only," Adit, who has been named leader of the Iban community, told Malaysiakini today.
Collective leadership
He said under the new arrangement it was going to be a collective leadership so that the party could penetrate more effectively on the ground.
"While we must be sensitive to other races, this arrangement will strengthen the overall leadership by giving different responsibilities to different people. They know their own communities very well," he added.
Adit also said PKR would contest all the Dayak majority seats - 20 Iban, six Bidayuh and three Orang Ulu seats.
"We have to select a candidate properly, because we do not want to send him to the 'slaughter house'," he said.
Lawyer Baru Bian has been named to head the Orang Ulu community while Granda Aing and Dr Christopher Kiyui for the Bidayuh section. The party has yet to announce who will lead the Malay/Melanau community.
The PKR reshuffle is seen as an early preparation by the party for the coming state election to be called any time between September this year and mid-2011.
The main tasks of the section leaders are to study the various problems peculiar to each constituency as well as to identify potential candidates.
