Mustafa: PAS will NOT contest in Penanti

The PAS top leadership has rejected calls made by the party's youth wing in Penang to field a candidate in the Penanti by-election on May 31.

The Permatang Pauh PAS division had also made a similar call that PAS should place its own candidate for the seat as this was what the grassroots wanted.
PAS election director Mustafa Ali however today clarified the matter by saying that the party will not be fielding a candidate in the Penanti by-election.
He said that PAS, DAP and PKR had an understanding that there shall be no infighting among themselves in elections.
PKR had already named Mansor Othman for the by-election.
The state seat fell vacant following the resignation of PKR's Mohammad Fairus Khairuddin on April 16.
"As such, Penang PAS Youth's intention to field a candidate in the by-election has been denied," Mustafa told Bernama today.
Nomination for the polling is on May 23 and the Barisan Nasional has yet to announce whether it would be contesting the seat.
Election machinery on hold
Previously Penang PAS Youth chief Mohd Hafiz Mohd Nordin had said that he would accept any decision made by the party leadership on the matter.
"There is a request from the grassroots urging the party to recapture the seat and the youth wing already has a candidate," Mohd Hafiz had said earlier this week.
Mohd Hafiz was peeved with the fact that PKR had named Mansor as the candidate without holding discussions with other coalition partners.
The Permatang Pauh PAS division has also frozen its election machinery in Penanti following Mansor's (right) selection as the candidate.
It is uncertain if the party leadership will be directing them to start moving the machinery soon to help Mansor win the seat.
Mustafa did not say anything on this today.
During the March 8, 2008 general election, Mohammad Fairus polled 7,346 votes to beat BN candidate Abdul Jalil Abdul Majid by a 2,219-vote majority.
The registration list updated until April 16, 2009, comprises 15,384 registered voters, made up of 15,360 normal voters and 24 postal voters.
From the total, 72.68 percent are Malays, 24.22 percent Chinese, 2.39 percent Indians and 0.71 percent, others.
