Subang Jaya state assemblyperson Hannah Yeoh believes she came close to being attacked on a quiet stretch of road in her constituency yesterday morning.

She was driving slowly towards a speed bump along USJ11/1G about 9.25am when a motorcyclist appeared on the right side of her car.

dap ceramah in usj 12 040308 hannah yeoh “He was about to take a weapon from underneath his shirt to attack me. I could not see if it was a pistol, a knife or a hammer and all I could do at that time was to honk continuously,” she said in a blog entry.

The noised drove the assailant away and Yeoh sped off to a row of shops nearby.

Although she did not take note of the motorbike registration number in her moment of shock, she managed to notify Subang Jaya residents by calling ‘SJ Alert’, the neighbourhood security network.

After that, she lodged a police report and returned to the site with investigation officers.

“I hope it’s not politically motivated. I’ve never received any threat prior to this. I believe it’s purely criminal. If I see him again, I should be able to point him out,” she said when contacted.

Chief inspector Loi Yew Lik of USJ8 police station, who had dispatched a team to scene upon receiving Yeoh’s distress call, said he could not ascertain whether the incident was politically motivated.

He also noted that no suspect has been identified yet, and that it may be a case of mistaken identity.

‘Real threat’ of robbery

This is not the first time that the DAP politician has had a brush with crime - she once fell victim to a snatch thief in Kuala Lumpur when she was 18.

“After my first experience, I’ve become very aware of my surroundings whenever I park or walk but this incident was exceptional. This man literally came out of nowhere and appeared next to my car!

“I will be more careful when the next time I approach road humps and will avoid driving alone.”

She also said she believes that the crime rate in Subang Jaya is higher than in other places, but that she has been coordinating with local groups to tackle the problem.

“So far, the chief police inspectors in my constituency have been very cooperative and have always responded to calls very quickly. They have even provided their mobile numbers to the residents.”

Yeoh remarked that the threat of being robbed is “very real” in commercial areas around Subang Jaya.

She urged Subang Jaya residents to subscribe to ‘SJ Alert’, and expressed the hope that the Home Ministry will focus on improving security.

“Our streets must be made safe again. More policemen and patrol cars should be allocated for urban areas such as Subang Jaya. The presence of police must be felt on the streets,” she added.
