On Pakatan keeps 2 'bukits', BN wins Btg Ai

Fed-Up Malaysian: The opposition again shows that it is still a very relevant force. The people are fed-up with BN, Umno in particular.

In this current world recession, our leaders have been slow to acknowledged the economic threat and prefer instead to spend their time and resources politicking, holding by-elections and Umno elections.

What a waste of time and resources.

The stimulus package announced by Najib was also too late in coming and how confident are we that all the money will really go towards rejuvenation of the economy?

Najib seems more interested in propping up Proton.

The by-election results are just a foretaste of what is to come in the next general elections.

If this travesty of bad leadership continues, the BN will be routed for sure and we will have a new government by 2013.

I can hardly wait.

Wilfred: I am not surprised with the BN win in Batang Ai. It would be a surprise if PKR won. Why? Most of the people there are poor.

Whoever can fulfill their basic needs will be their master and have their support. Only when those basic needs have been taken care off will they fight injustice, inequality etc.

Besides their only source of news is TV1 (and perhaps TV3) which are biased. In Perak and Kedah, people are better off financially and can take care of themselves.

They can therefore fight injustice, inequality etc. Whether or not there will be local development or new roads being built to their home in future is no longer an issue for them.

If PR wishes to win the remote areas of Sabah and Sarawak, they must have people there to do community work to help these people be independent of government assistance.

These people will only vote for PR if they are convinced that PR leaders will take care of them and their basic needs are not affected if they vote for PR.

PR can have a few such projects in selected places and use this to deliver the message that PR indeed cares for the rakyat's welfare.

I remember that when I was young, we had a water tank to collect rainwater - one of our basic needs. BN said those who voted for BN would be given a water tank.

Therefore, we all voted for BN. But of course, we still needed to pay for the water tank on an installments basis. Without this so-called government scheme, we would never be able to buy a water tank.

All this simply because we were poor and did not have the cash or our own transport. The only transport we had at that time was our feet and sometimes, the bus.

Timmy Say: BN can't downplay the significance of losing two of the three by-elections when it has enormous advantages over the opposition in terms of the resources and coverage.

Yes, they have been shown the humble pie, but nothing is more important than to make amends by admitting their take-over mistake in Perak.

They should now announce they will agree to the dissolution of the Perak assembly. And to the PM, please don't do things half way, for example, releasing just 13 ISA detainees.

All this half-way effort will make the rakyat think you are trying to put up a show to dupe them into believing you are a changed person.

If you are really serious about reforming, you must ready to admit your mistakes in front of the rakyat; undo every undemocratic move of the past and have the courage to do the right thing.

Alfred Ho: So once again, the rakyat have spoken with a resounding voice, hence the handsome victory by Pakatan Rakyat in both Bukit Gantang and Bukit Selambau.

All this goes to show that all right-thinking Malaysians have had enough of Barisan rule and that the arrogance that it has been displaying all these years is clearly being rejected.

It is my belief that part of Pakatan Rakyat's success is partly due to the power grab by the Barisan government in Perak.

Hopefully, it will just be a matter of time before Pakatan Rakyat takes over the reins of power although at the moment it still remains as a dream.

Finally, my heartiest congratulations to Pakatan Rakyat for their tremendous success in trouncing the BN candidates.

Puterabatu: Some interesting observations:

1. Mahathir has no longer the influence he yielded during his tenure as Malaysia's longest-serving dictator;

2. The 13 independents, who thought they had a chance, lost pathetically. Look guys, Arumugam won because of Pakatan's supporters due to Saiful Izham's disqualification, that is all!

3. The Umno saboteurs (most likely Khir Toyo supporters) delivered what they promised during the Umno elections. Congratulations boys!

4. Samy Vellu is busy packing his bags ready for a long holiday in Honolulu, it would seem that Vell Paari is going along too - he can kiss his MIC presidency goodbye;

5. Ex-Bukit Selambau Adun Mr. Arumugam is jumping up and down in his Pagoda shirt and kain sarong!

6. Manikumar is going to have to assist negotiating with the bankers who financed the independents' campaign.

They (the candidates) may be sued and left bankrupt after the whipping they received;

7. According to electoral 'experts': Pakatan's win in Bukit Selambau and Bukit Gantang is in no way a referendum on Najib's premiership; but the Batang Ai one surely is!

8. The ghost of Altantuyaa still remains! Eat humble pie, Najib.

Branchis Simon: The victory for PKR at both the two Bukit clearly sends message to BN that the rakyat has awoken.

BN was capitalising on the TDM's campaign hoping that the he can pull in the votes at the eleventh hour but it was all in vain.

Samad Ahmad: BN relies so much on Sabah and Sarawak. Without these two states' loyalty, BN would be surely crushed. So wake up, leaders of Sabah and Sarawak.

This is the time to demand. Demand for a bigger share of the oil revenue. Ask for a deputy prime minister's post.

Demand for a bigger allocations of the federal budget. After all, see for yourselves the condition of your undulating roads.


On Samy: Defeat not due to candidate

Mathavan Velayutham: Samy was quoted as saying: ‘In our campaigns, about 30 percent of the voters said they would be voting for Ganesan.

‘But I don't know how they changed their mind in the last minute and gave their votes to our opponent,' he told reporters this morning.
