The Selayang Municipal Council's proposal (dropped today) to have the name Batu Caves changed to Selayang must be excused for their lack of business acumen.

These same people, had they been the board members of a company like Coca-Cola, would probably find in their rationale some justification to have that named changed too if given half the chance.

All that is needed is for them to read the latest issue of Malaysian Business about Malaysian brand names and maybe they will get enlightened and begin to understand the value in the brand name "Batu Caves"!

Obviously the name Batu Caves conjures up certain images in all Malaysians who have seen the place. That may have been anathema to some of the councillors. But isn't that image is what gives the place its value?

Maybe someone can tell me of what financial value an improved image of the Selayang Municipal Council will have on the economy after Batu Caves is taken off the map of Kuala Lumpur and Selangor?
