March 27 marked Najib Abdul Razak first speech as Umno president and as we all know, the president of Umno is automatically the prime minister of Malaysia. In most blogs, everyone is asking the question - what can we expect from our new leader?

Will he save the country from the economic cancer that is sweeping the world? Will he be able to unite a divided Malaysia and most importantly, make Umno relevant again? From Najib, I think that we can expect the same that we have seen in the past months.

The hostile takeover of Perak was, of course, masterminded by Najib and his dream team and thinking that they had already won, they never expected Pakatan Rakyat and the rakyat to put up such a fight.

The funny thing is that as I looked at the Umno assembly, everyone was there and if you look at the news, it is all the same. They are all ignoring the one fact – Perak has two menteri besar and two state excos. Yet, we go on living day in and day out.

These days even I do the same, although day in and day out I keep thinking about what can I do to make difference. We need a Willam Wallance (the hero of Scotland) or another folk hero, to fight for our freedom.

Yes freedom. Although we Malaysians will never admit it but it is true - we have lost our freedom but yet we do not do anything about it. We look amusingly at Thailand, Philippines and Indonesia but really, how much would Malaysia swallow before we explode?

Nah, why bother? It’s safer to sit back read a blog or two and post a comment or two while the bloggers themselves get hauled off to prison and lose their livelihood. What do we do? What do we risk? Nothing. So nothing risked is nothing gained, as they say.

As the three by-elections draws nearer and being in one of the areas involved, I can see things up close. The bulk of us would log in by the hour to follow the latest developments, reading unbiased news provided by the bloggers and others. Have we ever thought the sacrifices that these heroic people are doing on our behalf?

Let’s ponder upon this for a while. These ordinary people have taken the extra step to apply for leave from their jobs or businesses, leave their families behind, spend their own funds to go to these places to cover the election.

Mind you, once the ‘caring’ government comes to know of them, they will be blacklisted, their businesses will be raided more often and they might even lose their jobs. Most of us forget that these people are like you and me. They are not from any political party and they are not from any mainstream or alternative media.

They are ordinary Joes like you and me. They are the unsung heroes. Why can’t someone take the lead and organise something? Maybe set up an NGO so that we can have a platform for these unsung heroes as they fight for a better country, a country that you and I live in.

Our children will grow up and what will their future be? Therefore, let’s take some decisive action, let’s set up an NGO so that we can support our brothers and sisters who are the front line warriors.
