I am forced to write this mail in response to Foreign Minister Syed Hamid Albar's statement with regards to Malaysians held under the Internal Security Act in Singapore recently.

It is very unbecoming and irresponsible of our minister to immediately back the detention of Malaysians abroad under the draconian ISA without any basis, charges and evidence presented to us.

If it had been a Singaporean being detained under the draconian ISA here in Malaysia, I am pretty sure the Singapore high commission here would have jumped to his or her defence and to serve the interest of their nationals if they were to be detained without any basis but on pure conjecture, assumptions and wild accusations.

This is how one should deal with ISA cases - never believe what the police are saying until they have proven their accusations and charges in an open court. This is line with the principle that one is presumed innocent until proven otherwise.

We have seen many instances in recent years how unbecoming and unprofessional the police can be. The perception today is that the police are a mere tool of the dominant political party to advance their political agenda. No more and no less. They forget they're in fact servants of the people, fed and paid by taxes paid by the rakyat.

It is therefore a pathetic response on the part of our government when its nationals abroad are detained under such draconian laws. What is the use of Malaysia having high commissions and embassies overseas when it cannot even protect or provide the necessary services to their own nationals when they're in trouble or, in this case, being manipulated to advance the political agenda of the People's Action Party of Singapore?

I, for one, have no confidence in this government which practises 'jungle diplomacy'on its own citizens to suit and advance its own political agenda.

I am therefore urging the relevant NGOs in Malaysia to come forward and fight the cause of Malaysian nationals detained overseas under the draconian ISA and to pressure the Singapore government to charge the Malaysian detained or release them immediately.

We can no longer rely on our government to serve and protect its own nationals, unless they are cronies of the ruling party.
