I have gone through your series of the so-called 'Tunku Tapes'. While it is always interesting to get behind the thought-processes of our leaders, I came away feeling that nothing significantly new was added to what we already know generally.

What struck me was the undimmed animosity between our first and present prime minister, both of whom are admirable men in different ways.

The unvarnished rambling between two retired men who obviously admire and agree with each other and who had distinguished themselves in their chosen paths must surely not have been intended by either of them to reach the public domain.

I wonder if those who take it upon themselves to release the tapes had carefully weighed the possible damage they could do to the memory of both men.

It is not difficult to imagine admirers of the beloved Tunku thinking they are doing him a good turn by releasing the recorded conversations detailing his (and their?) antipathies with people like Dr Mahathir.

They will only have succeeded in rehashing familiar criticisms of Mahathir and also showing a less-than-favourable human side of the Tunku and starkly exposing the partialities of a reputed journalist.

It is a sad commentary on the extent some people are prepared to go to 'get even', so to speak.
