I do not understand the unrelenting hoo-ha about Azalina's alleged sexual orientation. Even if she chooses a woman as her partner, what's the big deal? Perhaps that speaks volumes about the quality of men in this country!

Let me make it clear that I am not at all a fan of Azalina's or Umno in general. That whole party reeks of injustice and needs to reflect on its raison d'etre . If indeed there was evidence that Puteri Umno's money was spent fraudulently, then yes, investigate that as a matter of public interest. It is outrageous that the top brass have said nothing to date about it which makes it seem as though there is something to hide.

However, with regard to her sexuality, I will defend her right not to be persecuted for allegedly being gay. Men and women of various sexual orientations exist in this country. You can't prosecute someone for being gay — that's just the way they are. No sense in persecuting, moralising and trying to get them "to change their ways". It doesn't work that way.

What does it matter to anyone how she, or any other person in this country, chooses to live their sexual lives? If her relationships are consensual, then where is the misconduct? I would understand the hoo-ha if she was exploiting her power as Puteri Umno chief and forcing someone into a relationship with her. Say for example, a chief minister rapes a 14-year-old, then yes , persecute and prosecute him for the non-consensual act and misuse of power as opposed to letting him run around the golf greens.

But this is not a case of a non-consensual relationship, so the issue of misconduct does not even arise. Being gay or bisexual does not make you a bad person. Attacking her for being a lousy leader or criminal breach of trust is one thing, attacking her for what her private life is, is another.

This whole sexuality issue is between her, her alleged partner and her alleged partner's husband to discuss and sort out. Being the Puteri Umno chief in a highly-religiously-regulated society adds a degree of 'complexity' and vulnerability, but it should not legitimise attacks against her.

Even for those who believe that homosexuality is wrong, whether from a morality or religious point of view, surely these righteous busybodies (including that Khalid Jafri and all others who have made nothing but denigrating comments about her sexuality) must also believe that is something between the individual and their Maker.

Surely these righteous moral and religious guardians must have also read, in their respective religious texts, how to be a better person by not casting the first stone, jangan sengaja mencari keburukan orang , giving everyone the benefit of the doubt, how prying into people's lives is a big sin, etc. So, can we please stop this witch-hunt?
